Film Negative Scanning

Film negative strips in most popular fromats Film negatives (transparencies)

Film negatives (transparancies) are far more prone to being damaged if left too long in unprotected & dust-ridden environments. As a consequence it can be difficult to process these negatives into old fashioned photographs after any length of time.

The best and more efficient alternative is to have them scanned and cleaned into digital images.

Here is what we can do with your old film strips:-

  • We can scan 35mm colour or black and white negatives of most formats.

  • Most strips hold up to 6 frames (negatives). Some of those frames may be blanks, which will be ignored during the scanning process.

  • We scan film strips at 1200 dots per inch (dpi), which is the benchmark for excellent quality transparancy images.

  • For higher quality reproductions we can scan at 2400dpi, or 4000dpi.

  • All images will be correctly orientated and cropped as standard.

  • You can have your digital images saved in high-quality/low-compression JPG format, or for a small fee (due to longer processing time), photo-editable TIFF file formats. (See point 3 of our FAQs for more information)

  • Your digital photographs can be saved to optical storage devices such as CD, DVD, SD Card or USB data pens and returned to you by Royal Mail's "Tracked 48" delivery service. Or if you live local you can come and collect on completion.

  • If you want a faster alternative, you can retrieve them from our Dropbox online storage service via a secure account (your originals will be returned by Royal Mail's "Tracked 48" delivery.)

  • For an additional fee we can create a DVD slideshow of some or all of your scanned images (particularly useful for birthdays and weddings etc) played to a piece of music of your choice. (See point 2 on our FAQ page for more details)

  • Good discounts for larger orders.

  • We do not charge VAT.

FILM NEGATIVE TYPES

We can scan the following film negatives:-

35mm colour and B&W film
On strips of up to 6 frames, we can scan them at 3 different resolutions, with a choice of cleaning & restoration standards.

110 Instamatic

Smaller than the 35mm film strips, and generally of an inferior standard in terms of picture quality.

Despite this we can scan them at 1200, 2400 or 4000dpi, along with a choice of cleaning & restorations levels.

126  Instamatic

Another older standard similar to the 110s in terms of relatively poor photo quality.

But again we offer three resolution standards plus a choice of cleaning levels.

Single Frames

Most 35mm film strips contain up to 6 frames, but single cut frames are not unknown. However, they are slightly more awkward to scan, and results can vary.

DETAILED SCAN SERVICES

We offer three levels of scanning detail depending on quality and turnaround times. For example some of our customers just want a straightforward transfer to digital format, and are not too concerned about dust removal, blemishes, washed-out colour etc. As a consequence the turnaround times in this instance is far quicker.

At the other end of the scale, we do have customers wanting some, or all of their digital photos painstakingly cleaned and restored.  As a consequence time-scales are longer as each photo has to be  thoroughly processed using our Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop applications.

As such the cost reflects the level of each service.
